I started STR with two business partners in November 2000. We wanted a business with high drive that was able to perform.
Initially, we focused on Hardware, Software and Telco perm recruitment. We negotiated good arrangements with clients and were able to pay ourselves a small salary before Christmas 2000. We had a good start.
I’ve held most roles in the business, from consultant through to trainer, Brand Manager, Sales Director and CEO.
As the business grew, we took turns leading the business. I was the best recruiter so I concentrated on billings. Brett Stephens was our first trainee and he’s now the CEO. Brett initially worked for me but quickly grew to be Engineering Director. Meanwhile, I opened up new sectors: HVAC, Mining, Health, Pharma, IT, Oil & Gas.
I spent a long time developing new markets outside the UK. I made the first international placement in Germany in Medical Writing, then started working in the Australian market. I worked all hours, coming into the office at 3am so I could work in China and Australia, and the business grew.
In 2018, I became CEO and led the company through a period of change and then into and through COVID. I’ve been in my current role for 18 months, guiding our EDI strategy, leading social value, and ensuring Operational Excellence across the business. I also represent the business at social/networking events, with our trade body and other parties, and, of course, sit on the Board.
I’ve worked in recruitment for 27 years now – it’s in my blood!
