Whether as a client or candidate, when you’ve used a recruitment consultant’s services, you’ve probably found they’re a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, friendly bunch, but have you ever wondered what on earth they’re on about?! This article breaks down the most commonly used jargon in the recruitment industry.
Candidates
- Perm (Permanent Role)
A permanent role is a long-term position where the employee is hired directly by the company, so they become a member of their staff, unlike temporary workers.
- Temp-to-Perm
This refers to a temporary position that has the potential to become a permanent role. Employers sometimes use this approach to evaluate a candidate’s performance before offering a long-term contract.
- Fixed-Term Contract
A fixed-term contract is a type of employment agreement that lasts for a specific period, with a clearly defined end date. Employees on fixed-term contracts have similar rights to permanent employees.
- Candidate/Talent Pool
A talent pool is a group of potential candidates sourced for when an appropriate position becomes available. Agencies make use of these to streamline the hiring process.
Compliance
- Umbrella Company
An umbrella company acts as an employer to contractors working on temporary assignments, managing their payroll and taxes. This arrangement is common for freelancers and contractors in the UK.
- IR35
IR35 is UK tax legislation aimed at determining whether a contractor is genuinely self-employed or essentially an employee for tax purposes. It affects how contractors are taxed.
- Onboarding
Onboarding is the process of integrating a new employee into a company, covering everything from completing necessary paperwork to training and orientation.
Solutions
- Managed Service Programme (MSP)
A comprehensive outsourcing solution where a consultancy takes full responsibility for managing an organisation’s contingent workforce, including recruitment, administration, and compliance.
- Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO)
RPO involves a company outsourcing all or part of its recruitment functions to a third-party provider, which manages the hiring process on the company’s behalf, usually for permanent staff.
- Retained Search
This is a more proactive, confidential form of recruitment, also known as ‘headhunting’ or ‘executive search’ as it’s a common approach for high-level roles. The ‘retained’ element refers to the client’s payment of an upfront fee.
